INTRODUCTION TO ENGLISH: Beginner Lesson 1

LESSON 1:  INTRODUCE YOURSELF

VOCABULARY:  what, who, when, where, why, how

KEY QUESTIONS:  What is your name? How old are you? What is your favorite color? How are you?

Make a poster of a body and label the basics- eyes, ears, head, nose, mouth, shoulders my arms, hands, fingers, legs, knees, feet, toes. Also try to have the words “stand up, sit down, jump, turn around, touch, walk, and run written down in English with the Spanish translation in a different color).

  1. Greet students (teach hello, good morning) Then go over “My name is…” “What is your name?” Point to “What” on the poster and ask what it is in Spanish.  Then practice with the kids what is your name?  Then point to a person and say what is her name? Her name is_____His name is_______.  Go over the whole class practicing several times.
  2. TPR(total physical response using movements) – have students stand up. Have them do all the things on the poster (jump, turn around, touch your nose or any other movements you can think of.) Repeat them in random order. If they seem to know them, great. If they don’t practice more over the weeks! Point to the words as you do them.
  3. Have them sit down and practice how old are you? Practice I am_______How old are you? After you ask a person ask them How old is she? How old is he? This also gives you a chance to practices numbers.(You can count with them. If they do, try to ask all the students how old they are. Then ask their favorite colors (in Spanish they should be told to listen… The worlds are cognates- almost the same). See if they know their colors. If not, review. Then ask, “How are you? Good or bad.” Point to the translations as you ask. Hopefully they will begin to answer.
  4. Song- Head, shoulders, knees and toes
  5. Have students sit down. Introduce yourself. Say “My name is… I am … years old. My favorite color is… Then ask questions. “What is my name? Yes, my name is… Is my name Sam? No my name is not Sam. My name is… How old am I? Yes, I am … years old. Am I 9 or am I 24? Yes, I am 24. What is my favorite color? Yes my favorite color is blue. Is my favorite color red? No. Is my favorite color pink or blue? Yes, my favorite color is blue.” Etc. you can also do this by asking the students questions about each other. “What is her name? How old is she? What is her favorite color?” Don’t forget to repeat a lot! 🙂 If students don’t know their numbers, don’t do your age, just do theirs (keep numbers 10 or under if they don’t know them). (use yourself as an example.)
  6. Game- play Simon says.
